About the Museum of the Viking Age

When the Museum of the Viking Age opens, visitors from around the world will be able to get up close to authentic objects from the Viking Age: the best-preserved Viking ships in existence, a Viking helmet, exquisite jewellery, coin hoards, swords, and much more. In total, more than 5,000 artefacts will be on display.

The Museum of the Viking Age is set to become the world’s leading arena for communicating the history of the Viking Age.

The museum will ensure that the public and future generations have access to cultural-historical knowledge and a deeper understanding of this unique period in Norwegian history.

The Museum of the Viking Age is part of the Museum of Cultural History at the University of Oslo. As a research museum, it plays a key international role in Viking Age studies. Our researchers are constantly making new and exciting discoveries that will be shared with the public.
