The Ship, the Grave Robbers and the Man in the Gokstad Grave

What was hidden in the big King's Mound outside the city of Sandefjord? Join Professor Jan Bill to the place where the Gokstad ship was found, and hear him talk about excavations, grave robbers and what we really know about the man who was buried here.

The duration of the video is close to 3 minutes.

Summary

  • The Gokstad ship was found in Kongshaugen, "The King's Mound", outside Sandefjord. It was named after the farm where it was found.
  • Originally, the burial mound was 50 meters long and around 40 meters wide.
  • In the mound, archaeologists found a complete Viking ship, and within the burial chamber laid the remains of a person whom we call today the Gokstad man.
  • When the ship was excavated in 1880, archaeologist Nicolay Nicolaysen immediately saw that someone had already broken into the grave.
  • The damage caused by the grave robbers was severe. Not only did they cut through beds and other furniture in the burial chamber, but they had also cut through the bottom of the ship itself.
  • We know that the Gokstad man was a large, powerful and muscular man. We do not know what kind of role he held in his time, but his grave places him in the highest social elite.
